Joanna Lew

Excelsior College

Sr. Operations Instructor, Exelon, Limerick Station

After leaving a “traditional” school her freshman year, Joanna Lew joined the US Navy and served in the Nuclear Power Program for two years before returning to civilian life.  Joanna then started working in nuclear power and soon realized that if she wanted to advance further in the industry, she would need to further her education. “In order to move throughout my organization, and advance, a technical degree is important to supplement my professional experience,” she said.

Joanna learned about the online BS in Nuclear Engineering Technology program through Excelsior College from other veterans who were very happy with their experience. “I went to Excelsior because they accepted credits from the Navy and other college courses,” she said.  What really enticed Joanna to pursue her degree through Excelsior was the potential to earn her degree online, noting, “Online education provided me the ability to continue to work full-time and go to school, while still being able to spend time with my husband and my two little twins.”

Earning her Bachelor’s degree allowed Joanna to advance her career. She completed her degree in January 2017 and was promoted from Instructor to Lead Instructor in March 2017.  She was also placed in her company’s Emerging Leader Program, as well as recommended by her Site’s Vice President to participate in the Tri-County Chamber of Commerce Leadership Program.

As the Equipment Operator Lead Instructor at Limerick Generating Station, Joanna is responsible for ensuring that quality training is provided to the plant’s Equipment Operators, both the new Initial Trainees, as well as the experienced Continuing Trainees. “In addition to supervising the group’s instructors, I am responsible for their training and professional development; ensuring compliance with corporate procedures and federal regulatory requirements.”
