Overview

The Bismarck State College (BSC) National Energy Center of Excellence in partnership with EPCE offers Smart Grid Courses to enhance employees’ ability to take on new job responsibilities and engage with new technologies and operations. Course curriculum addresses various topics and is developed to educate employees at all different levels of responsibility and interaction with the Smart Grid deployment.

Courses are available online in a self-paced format without an instructor. Each course unit contains self-check exams and/or quizzes for flexible accessibility for students to assess their progress and identify topics in which to focus. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are available for some of the courses, as noted below.

Course Information

This course examines electricity production from various forms of renewable energy and provides a vision of the Smart Grid. Renewable energy sources including solar, wind, tidal, geothermal and others are studied in detail, covering availability, dispersion, methods of recovery, utilization, and integration into the Smart Grid.

Target Audience: Electric utility workforce including technicians, customer service representatives, system operators, as well as the incoming workforce.

This course examines the business impacts of the Smart Grid. The course is focused on providing a comprehensive understanding of the overall business impacts to those that will be making decisions surrounding the implementation of the smart grid and to those that will be governing and operating the smart grid itself.

Target Audience: Broad base of electric utility workforce who installs, maintains, operates, repairs, markets, or sells and supports the smart grid including finance, HR, IT, planners, and operations management.

Course Content: 10-12 hours, worth 1 CEU

This course examines the operation considerations for the Smart Grid and will focus on understanding the operational considerations for technicians who will install, control, monitor, and maintain the smart grid. The course is designed to ensure that technicians working on the smart grid have a balanced understanding of why and how the smart grid will be operated, both from the utility perspective as well as the customer perspective.

Target Audience: Technical staff who will install, control, monitor, and maintain the smart grid including line workers, transmission planners, system operators, technicians.

Course Content: 10-12 hours, worth 1 CEU

The course is designed to provide customer service representatives and other industry employees with a brief, non-technical overview of what the smart grid is and what enhancements it will provide both the consumer and the electric power industry.

Target Audience: Customer service representatives and other non-technical staff.
